The earthquake of 2010 proved to be devastating for the country of Haiti. Referred to as Restaveks, many children were victims of child slavery. Wealthier families would most likely take in children to perform household duties in exchange for shelter and food. However, physiological and sexual curse, especially with young girls, was very common.



Many times, these threatened children would live with HIV-positive adults, leaving them very exposed to the disease. Among orphaned and vulnerable children, 51.4% of girls and 48.6% of boys lived in households where they were exposed to male-perpetrated physical or sexual violence. (Gupta) The abuse has caused many health issues amongst children. Depression and anxiety has affected childrens mental health while respiratory illnesses and disease has contributed to child mortality.


Gupta believes that the aftermath of the earthquake may only make the authentic
