On January 16, 1919 the eighteenth amendment was passed. This amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, or transportation of lift up liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the fall in States (U.S. Constitution, Section 1) On midnight of January 16, 1920 the eighteenth amendment took affect which was the beginning of the meter period commonly known as the Prohibition. The Volstead Act supplemented the amendment by also forbidding the bartering, delivering, furnishing, or possession of any excite liquor. This act also defined intoxicating liquors as containing much than 0.5% alcohol. President Woodrow Wilson vetoed the Volstead Act but congress overrode his veto the in truth same day. By prohibiting alcohol the politics was attempting to improve society. The government felt that that by banning alcohol they could improve tender moral, reduce crime and corruption, and contribute to the overall health of the American people. Politicians also believed that outlawing alcohol would significantly reduce the tax upshot created by the costs of prisons and jails. The prohibition failed for many reasons and it was repealed by the 20 first amendment only thirteen years later.



In reality, the effects of prohibition turned out drastically different than expected, having more or less the opposite effect of what the government intended. When consuming alcohol became ineligible it actually made people want it more. Especially the jr. crowd was affected by the desire for the forbidden fruit. Bars and Taverns were shut down which were replaced by speakeasies, places where people would forgather to drink. Many individuals and groups successfully attempted to manufacture and sell bootlegged beer and booze to speakeasies and private parties for a profit. Entire networks of underground suppliers and distributers emerged.
